Stainless steel casting

What is stainless steel casting?

Stainless steel casting is a manufacturing process used to create complex and intricate components from stainless steel. This process involves melting stainless steel and pouring it into a mold where it solidifies into the desired shape. Stainless steel casting offers several benefits, including excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and durability, making it ideal for a wide range of applications in industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical, and construction. The precision of this method allows for the production of parts with intricate designs and tight tolerances, often reducing the need for additional machining.

How are Stainless Steel Castings Made?

Stainless steel investment castings are made through a detailed process known as investment casting or lost-wax casting. Here are the key steps:

  • Pattern Creation: A wax pattern, which is an exact replica of the desired part, is created.
  • Assembly: Wax patterns are attached to a central wax runner system to form a tree-like structure.
  • Shell Building: The wax assembly is repeatedly dipped into a ceramic slurry and coated with fine sand. This process is repeated several times to build up a thick ceramic shell.
  • Wax Removal: The ceramic shell is heated in a kiln, causing the wax to melt and drain away, leaving a hollow ceramic mold.
  • Melting: Stainless steel is melted in a furnace.
  • Pouring: The molten stainless steel is poured into the preheated ceramic mold.
  • Cooling: The metal cools and solidifies inside the ceramic shell.
  • Shell Removal: The ceramic shell is broken away to reveal the cast part.
  • Cutting: Individual castings are cut from the runner system.
  • Finishing: The castings are cleaned, and any excess material is removed. Further machining or surface treatments may be applied to achieve the final specifications.

Here's a table outlining commonly cast stainless steel alloys and their common usages:
