What is the pumpcasing, function and material
A pump casing is a component that seals off the inside of the pump to the atmosphere to prevent leakage and retain pressure. It surrounds the pump rotor, which transmits energy to the fluid handled via the impeller(s) mounted on the rotating shaft in the case of centrifugal pumps. In positive displacement pumps, the casing surrounds the rotary or reciprocating displacement elements, such as one or more pistons. The inlet and outlet nozzles direct the fluid into and out of the pump, often classified as inlet or suction nozzle and discharge nozzle based on their function. The casing also serves several functions:
- Ensures pressure containment.
- Includes the collector, either as an integral part of the casing or as a separate piece.
- Allows for rotor installation and removal.
- Supports the pump or provides a structural connection to the pump’s support.
- Maintains alignment of the pump and its rotor under the influence of pressure and reasonable piping loads. The material of the casing can vary depending on the application, including cast or wrought iron, chromium steel, duplex steel, or plastic for certain pumps.
